The Comedy of Errors (2004)

Rupert played Luciana in an all-male production of The Comedy of Errors at the Shakespeare Festival Neuss in Germany. I assume it was this production in July 2004, as we’ve heard separately that he was in a production of this play for Wild Thyme Productions in 2004. According to his CV, the director was Stephen Jameson.

The all-male cast wouldn’t have helped with all the mistaken identities! Seriously, though, I see they also did an all-female Hamlet, which must have been extraordinary.

The Fix (2004)

This is one of the plays listed on Rupert’s CV from when he was studying with LAMDA. It is a musical, with book and lyrics by John Dempsey and music by Dana P Rowe, that premiered at the Donmar Warehouse, London in 1997 (Wikipedia).

Rupert played the character Cal Chandler, with directors Anne Durham and Stephen Jameson.

I’m not entirely sure of the year, but I’m guessing the first half of 2004 (i.e. at the end of the 2003-04 academic year).

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (2004)

I found this entry on broadwayworld.com, and Rupert verified it was true when I asked him in London after a Dear Evan Hansen show.

Rupert was one of six vocalists in a production of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris at the Landor Theatre (over the Landor pub) in Clapham, London.

The show ran from 25 March to 17 April 2004, as part of the London Fringe.

  • Director: Linda Edwards
  • Cast: Marie Daly, Carys Gray, Kiara Jay, Stewart O’Reilly, Joseph Wicks, Rupert Young

While broadwayworld.com lists the production as also touring to the Southport Arts Centre, and Unity Theatre in Liverpool, Rupert says they were different productions, and he was only involved in the London show.

The Wonderful World of Dissocia (2002)

The first of three plays listed on Rupert’s CV from when he was studying with LAMDA. The play was written by Anthony Neilson, and was ‘originally workshopped with a group of students at LAMDA in 2002’ – golly gosh! – before being re-written and produced for the Edinburgh Festival in 2004 (Wikipedia).

Rupert’s character was Nurse, and the director was the writer Anthony Nielson.

I’m assuming this was during the first half of 2002 (i.e. at the end of the 2001-02 academic year).

The Rose and the Ring (2001)

This appears to be Rupert’s first professional role, but the details are a bit muddled and/or lost in the mists of time.

Rupert’s official CV has him playing Mr Smith in The Rose and the Ring at the King’s Head Theatre, directed by Lucy Skilbeck. There are other citations mentioning the King’s Head Theatre as well.

However, the production actually seems to have been at the Hen and Chickens Theatre Bar. (Unless it was staged at both, of course!)

Anyway! I’ve found the following links:

The musical is based on the ‘satirical work of fantasy fiction’ of the same name by William Makepeace Thackeray (Wikipedia), with music by Michael Jeffrey, and book and lyrics by Peter Morris.

I have to say I’m intrigued!

still researching…

This is a list of Rupert’s work that we’re still researching – things we’ve heard about or seen glimpses of, but don’t have enough confirmed details about to post. If you can help us with more information and links or images, we’d very much appreciate it!

film

  • The Ministry, a film by Ben Kent, featuring Rupert and Jasmine Hemsley – the team who brought us Helen and Ben!
  • Rupert filmed something in England in November 2013 for a project to be released in 2014 … though we still don’t know what! And he didn’t seem all that certain that he wouldn’t end up on the cutting room floor. {sad face}
  • Rupert filmed a movie in the US in 2015. No further details yet, but this was mentioned in an interview, and he mentions ‘a new comedy-drama’ in another interview.
  • Rupert was off on a new work project as of early December 2016, though we don’t know what! Perhaps the Bet Victor ad…?

theatre

  • Feeding Time at the BAC (Battersea Arts Centre), as listed in the Company programme. This is perhaps the production which ran from 22 November to 11 December 2005. Listing for the production on UK Theatre Web. I can’t find a full cast list, but other actors have referenced the production on their CVs.
  • Three’s a Crowd at Shepherd Churchill Hall, as listed in the Company programme. This might be one of Rupert’s joke listings, but there’s a “Broadway revue” with this title that dates back to 1930. The Hall is real enough, and can be found at Harrow school. So perhaps this is one of his early / amateur efforts…?
  • Rupert possibly? probably? hopefully! appeared in performances of The Show Must Go On! concert at the Palace Theatre on 13-15 November 2020 and 20-24 January 2021. This is a collection of cast performances from various West End shows, including Dear Evan Hansen, with profits going to Acting For Others and The Fleabag Support Fund. With no specific cast lists, I’m left with more questions than answers! More info and ticket sales here.

As I said above, any help would be awesome!
